PGPD Suspect in Custody in Connection With Fatal Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged a suspect wanted for a recent murder in the unincorporated section of Takoma Park. The suspect is 22-year-old Wilmer Echenique-Navarro of Capitol Heights. He’s charged in connection with the murder of 40-year-old Derek Coleman of no fixed address.



On March 3, 2024, at approximately 7:15 am, officers responded to the 6700 block of New Hampshire Avenue for a reported shooting. The victim was located in an apartment building stairwell suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.



Through various investigative techniques, detectives identified Echenique-Navarro as the suspect. On April 15, 2024, the PGPD’s Fugitive Unit located the suspect and took him into custody. He has admitted to shooting the victim. The motive remains under investigation.



Echenique-Navarro is charged with first and second degree murder and is in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
